What is Acupuncture?

Each acupuncture appointment begins with an extensive intake, during which the practitioner will assess the patient’s constitution and determine the specific “pattern of disharmony” which will in turn address the root cause of the presenting issue.

This is done by asking a series of detailed questions, as well as observing real-time physical signs. After identifying the root of the issue, your practitioner will develop a treatment plan and acupuncture point prescription according to your specific pattern.

How does it work?

Eastern Philosophy

The human body is made up of an energetically charged meridian system that is comprised of specific channels. These channels are linked with the body’s tissues, organs, and other pathways. Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of thin needles at specific acupuncture points along the various meridians/channels creating stimulation and blood flow or “Qi”.

Western View

The simplest answer, from a modern Western medical perspective, is that tiny acupuncture needles (less than 1/10th the size of a sewing needle) inserted into the skin promote blood circulation to targeted areas. This process activates the body’s immune and nervous systems, which in turn reduce inflammation and release endorphins to alleviate pain. Acupuncture helps to correct imbalances in the body caused by external factors such as stress, toxins, and injury. Once restored to proper balance, the body can better heal itself.

不通這痛,痛則不通

TONG ZE BU TONG; BU TONG ZE TONG.

       — HUANG DI NEI JING

The above quote is taken from the ancient Chinese text known as the Huang Di Nei Jing. This quote is considered by many to be one of the defining principles of acupuncture and it roughly translates into English as saying:

“If there is free flow, there is no pain; if there is pain, there is lack of free flow.”
